Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@taxifycanada.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A benefit is a form of financial assistance or support provided by the government to help with various living costs. These benefits are often received after you file your tax return. The amount you get is based on your income and your family's situation. For example:

  • Canada Child Benefit (CCB): A tax-free monthly payment for eligible families with children under 18.
  • GST/HST Credit: A tax-free payment given every three months to help people with low or modest incomes.
  • Canada Workers Benefit: A refundable tax credit for working individuals and families with low incomes.
  • Provincial/Territorial Benefits: Each province and territory has its own benefits, which can include things like a rent benefit (like the one in BC) or an energy benefit (like the Ontario Trillium Benefit).

If you make a mistake on your tax return, we can help you to correct it and file an amended return if necessary. It's important to address any mistakes as soon as possible to avoid penalties or further issues.

The penalty is 5% of the amount you owe, plus an additional 1% for each full month that the return is late, up to a maximum of 12 months.

EI benefits are taxable income and will be included in your T4E slip.

You must create your own CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) account. Representatives, such as accountants or tax preparers, can't do it for you. They can, however, be granted access to your account after you have set it up.

The process of creating a CRA account is designed to verify your identity and ensure your information remains secure. Here's a general overview of how it works:

You must have filed a tax return: To register for a CRA account, you typically need to have a filed and assessed income tax and benefit return from the current or previous tax year.

You need specific information: To verify your identity, you'll be asked to provide your Social Insurance Number (SIN), your date of birth, and an amount from a specific line on your most recent tax return.

Choose your sign-in method: You have a few options for creating your account:

  • CRA user ID and password: You create a unique username and password specifically for the CRA.
  • Sign-In Partner: You can use your existing online banking credentials from a participating financial institution.
  • Provincial partner: If you're in British Columbia or Alberta, you can use your BC Services Card or Alberta.ca Account.

Identity verification: The CRA will further verify your identity. This can be done immediately using a document verification service (uploading a photo of yourself and your ID) or by having a security code mailed to your home address.

Please refer to the 'Newcomers guide' file in the download section for information on how to set up a CRA account. If you still have questions, please reach out to us.

RESP contributions aren't tax-deductible federally, but the growth within the plan is tax-free, and the beneficiary (your child) will pay taxes on withdrawals when used for education. You may also be eligible for the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG).

It's common to receive a request for more information from the CRA regarding your GST/HST, Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB), or Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) after your first tax filing in Canada. This often involves providing details of your world income , spousal information, or other details needed to process and verify these applications.

World income refers to any income you earned outside of Canada. You do not need to report income earned within Canada, as that is already accounted for in your Canadian tax filing.

The CRA uses this information to determine your eligibility and the amount of benefits and credits you receive. Generally, a higher reported income, even from outside Canada, can slightly reduce the amount of benefits and credits you are eligible for.

If you did not work or generate any income outside Canada before your date of entry, you can declare your world income as zero.

To update the information, you can call them at 1-800-387-1193 and provide the information they ask for in the explanation section (Pg-2).

If you receive multiple letters requesting the same information, you only need to provide it once. The CRA will share the update across all relevant departments, and any held benefits will be paid to you in a lump sum after verification.

A Notice of Assessment (NOA) is a document the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) sends you after processing your tax return.

It's essentially a summary that shows:

  • The results of your tax return, including whether you will receive a refund or have a balance owing.
  • An explanation of any changes the CRA made to your return.
  • Your updated contribution limits for registered plans like an RRSP or TFSA.

Please note: This notice does not show details about your benefits, information about these payments are  sent to you in a separate notice.

Tax Deductions

These are expenses you can subtract from your total income to get a lower amount of "taxable income." The more deductions you have, the less of your income is subject to tax.

Common Examples:

  • Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) Contributions: Money you put into an RRSP is fully deductible from your income.
  • Union or Professional Dues: Fees you pay to a union or professional organization can be deducted.
  • Child Care Expenses: Money paid for childcare can be deducted by the lower-income spouse.
  • Moving Expenses: If you move for a new job or to attend a post-secondary institution, you may be able to deduct eligible moving costs.

 Tax Credits

These directly reduce the amount of tax you have to pay. There are two main types:

  • Non-Refundable Tax Credits: These can bring your tax owed down to zero, but you won't get a refund for any unused amount. However, some can be carried forward to a future year. Examples: The Basic Personal Amount (a credit everyone can claim), Tuition Tax Credit, and the Medical Expense Tax Credit.
  • Refundable Tax Credits: These can reduce your tax owing and can also result in a tax refund if the credit is more than the tax you owe.
